In a move aimed at strengthening partnership and cooperation between the Saudi Authority for Intellectual Property and the Saudi business sector in the Kingdom and in cooperation with the Council of Saudi Chambers ,The authority organized an introductory meeting to define its role, activities and current and future directions for the protection of intellectual property in the Kingdom, in the presence of a number of Saudi stakeholders and businessmen.
The Executive Chairman of the Saudi Authority for Intellectual Property Dr. Abdulaziz bin Mohammed Al-Suwailem noted the importance of the partnership between the Saudi Authority for Intellectual Property and the Saudi business sector, and its keenness to provide high quality services that meet the aspirations of this sector and in line with its commercial interests in order to stimulate the national economy and protect national trademarks, industries and patent. He stressed that this meeting is the first in a series of meetings that the Authority intends to organize with the various private sector activities in Saudi Arabia to consult on intellectual property issues, the challenges facing the sector in the related fields, and prospects for cooperation between the two sides to have an integrated system in the field of intellectual property protection that supports commercial and economic growth and enhances the image of the Kingdom and its pioneering role in this vital field. The meeting witnessed a presentation on the historical background of the Kingdom in the field of intellectual property, from its accession to the International Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in 1982, through Paris Convention for the Protection of Industrial Property (PARIS) and the issuance of a number of related regulations such as the Copyright, patent and trademark. Until The establishment of the Saudi Authority for Intellectual Property and the launch of its strategy in conjunction with the vision of the Kingdom 2030. They also discuss the mission and the strategic objectives that the Saudi Authority for Intellectual Property is seeking to achieve which exemplified in the following: preparing the national strategy for intellectual property, the development of intellectual property systems, the efficient and high quality of products and services, the raising of awareness of intellectual property rights, the direction of the intellectual property system in the Kingdom, and the provision of information on this area and cooperation with IP enforcement agencies and relevant organizations.
The fields of intellectual property have been identified, including patents, industrial designs, trademarks, copyright, neighboring rights and plant varieties. As well as anticipating the future directions of the Authority in accordance with a specific time frame, the most important of which is the formation of an international advisory board, cooperation with international offices and organizations, accession to priority treaties and contribution to the establishment of specialized courts on intellectual property.
The discussions focused on the horizons and areas of cooperation between the two sides and their aspirations for their role in the field of protection of trademarks and industrial patents, raising awareness and education in the fields of intellectual property and drawing on private sector perspectives in their activities.
